Maynard writes about mostly all personal experiences, so I wouldn't doubt that Prison Sex stems from some kind of personal experiece of his. Just like Todd and rsaavedra, my vote goes to Tool as well.

Stinkfist has some pretty disturbing lyrics as well, take a look for yourself...

Something has to change.
Un-deniable dilemma.
Boredom's not a burden
Anyone should bear.

Constant over stimu-lation numbs me
but I would not want
You any other way.

Cause,
It's not enough.
I need more.
Nothing seems to satisfy.
I said,
I don't want it.
I just need it.
To breathe, to feel, to know I'm alive.

Finger deep within the borderline.
Show me that you love me and that we belong together.
Relax, turn around and take my hand.

I can help you change
Tired moments into pleasure.
Say the word and we'll be
Well upon our way.

Blend and balance
Pain and comfort
Deep within you
Till you will not want me any other way.

But,
It's not enough.
I need more.
Nothing seems to satisfy.
I said,
I don't want it.
I just need it.
To breathe, to feel, to know I'm alive.

Knuckle deep inside the borderline.
This may hurt a little but it's something you'll get used to.
Relax. Slip away.

Something kinda sad about
the way that things have come to be.
Desensitized to everything.
What became of subtlety?

How can this mean anything to me
If I really don't feel anything at all?

I'll keep digging till
I feel something.

Elbow deep inside the borderline.
Show me that you love me and that we belong together.
Shoulder deep within the borderline.
Relax. Turn around and take my hand.

these are some of my favorite songs up there. As far as writing without living... yes, you can write stuff like that without having been there and I believe that's what maynard did, and he did it very well in Prison Sex. Fantasy is a powerful thing in the hands of a great artist.

as far as songs go... hmmmm... how bout anything GWAR!? I would post some, but I'm sure it's against some forum rule to post stuff like that. So, I'll just give you this link...

The spookiest song I've yet heard is Down At The Tube Station At Midnight.
It shows an example of neonazi horror in England. The Jam was one of a few rock stars in England that didn't get caught up in the 'right wing fad' at the time, which makes this song a little extra creepy for me. Here's a sample.

"I glanced back on my life, thought about my wife, 'cos they took the keys, and she'll think it's me."

The "stalking" type of love songs can be disturbing.

"Every breath you take, I'll be watching you"

or from Come Rain or Come Shine by Ray Charles (best version) and others.

"I'm gonna love you, like no ones loved you, come rain or come shine. Happy together, unhappy together and wouldn't it be fine"

Old Friend by Lyle Lovett is pretty dark too, especially for such a cheery tune.

Oh, there's 'Bang Bang' by Sonny and Cher too, for the 'what the heck is Cher singing?' factor. I saw Coil do a really good cover of it once. The rest of their set sucked, though.

Seether "Gasoline" has a pretty gross (and disturbing) line in it...

... drat, don't have the jewel case handy. -.-'

Just about any Necrobestiality song is disturbing. *shudder*

Anathema "Closer" is like an aural acid trip. >.>; Crazy, and creepy.

The lyrics in the songs from the more politically oriented Haitian artists can be quite, um, intense. Stuff like Manno Charlemagne and Boukman Eksperyans, which have been known to have lyrics, disguised or not, about lynching Uzi-armed government death squad members...

I can't believe nobody's mentioned Johnny Cash's version of the NIN song Hurt. And the music video... sad, sad, sad.

Here you go...

"Hurt"

I hurt myself today
to see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
the only thing that's real
the needle tears a hole
the old familiar sting
try to kill it all away
but I remember everything

what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end
you could have it all
my empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of ****
upon my liar's chair
full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
beneath the stains of time
the feeling disappear
you are someone else
I am still right here

what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end

you could have it all
my empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
if I could start again
a million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

My vote goes to The Intense Humming of Evil by the Manic Street Preachers...

The court has come.
The court of the Nations and into the courtroom will come
the martyrs of Majdanek and Oswiecim.
From the ditch of Kerch the dead will rise,
they will arise from the graves,
they will arise from flames bringing with them the acrid smoke
and the deathly odour of scorched and martyred Europe.
And the children they too will come, stern and merciless.
The butchers had no pity on them.
Now the victims will judge the butchers.
Today the tear of the child is the judge.
The grief of the mother is the prosecutor.

You were what you were
Clean cut, unbecoming
Recreation for the masses
You always mistook fists for flowers

Welcome welcome soldier smiling
Funeral march for agony's last edge
6 Million screaming souls
Maybe misery - maybe nothing at all
Lives that wouldn't have changed a thing
Never counted - never mattered - never be

Arbeit macht frei

Transports of invalids
Hartheim Castle breathes us in
In block 5 we worship malaria
Lagerstrasse, poplar trees
Beauty lost, dignity gone
Rascher surveys us butcher bacteria

Welcome welcome soldier smiling
Soon infected, nails broken, hunger's a word
6 Million screaming souls
Maybe misery - maybe nothing at all
Lives that wouldn't have changed a thing
Never counted - never mattered - never be

Drink it away, every tear is false
Churchill no different
Wished the workers bled to a machine

nin - "closer"
help me I broke apart my insides, help me I've got no soul to sell
help me the only thing that works for me, help me get away from myself
I want to #### you like an animal

toadies - "possum kingdom"
I can promise you
You'll stay as beautiful
With dark hair
And soft skin...forever
Forever...
Do you wanna die?
I promise you
I will treat you well

soundgarden - "jesus christ pose"
And you stare at me
In your jesus christ pose
Arms held out
Like you’ve been carrying a load
And you swear to me
You don’t want to be my slave
But you’re staring at me
Like I need to be saved

(if i'm not mistaken a famous nw serial killer arranged his victims this way)

radiohead - "pull / pulk revolving doors"
But there are trapdoors
That you can’t come back from

(for some reason that last line always gives me chills)

bauhuas - (i forget the song title)
i hold the fresh, pink baby
i slice off those rosy cheeks
because i am so thirsty

great topic!

This one goes back a ways, but "Tucson, Arizona (Gazette)" by Dan Fogelberg (Windows and Wallls album) is a creepy song, especially when you consider that it was written by a guy best known for ballads and love songs.

Speaking of ballads, "The Ballad of Hollis Brown", written and recorded by Bob Dylan and re-done later by the Neville Brothers on their "Yellow Moon" album, is another creepy, sad song.

Mister, would you please help my pony?
He's over there behind the tree
He's down in the dirt, would ya help him?
I think it's his lung

Mister would you please help my pony?
He's chewin' bark and not the leaves
He's cryin' like a baby, would you help him?
I think it's his lung

Mister, would you please help my pony?
He's down - He ain't gettin' up
He coughed up snot in the driveway
And I think his lung's ****ed up
Pony, Pony, Pony

Mister, would you please help my pony?
He's over there lookin' at me
He can't talk because he's a pony
I think it's his lung
