Hi, I purchased an amazing amplifier and I need a dac to match it up to. I have the LD MKVI+ amp which is on par with or better than the WA22 amp. I also own the HD800 headphones which are one of the most revealing headphones.
I want to buy a dac that will not let me down.
I know some people day that "dacs are all the same" but IMO unless they did personal testing with high quality recordings with equivalent quality equipment to mine then I don't buy it.
What is the most bang for buck fully balanced dac I can buy up to $700?
I don't care for dsd playback, I just want a pure dac.

Balanced adds a lot to the price (if done properly). The mfrs probably figure if they need to double all the components in the analog stage, then adding features like DSD & S/PDIF probably isn't a big increment in cost.

I know nothing about it, but how about: http://schiit.com/products/gungnir

For $700, that's about the best you can do in a balanced DAC. If my budget was that strict, I'd elect to not get the USB version.

Wow, those are really nice! Do you own any?

I've been using the NFB-15.32 (DAC & amp) for the past 18 months and no regrets buying it.
The newest revision is called the NFB-15.
