Thanks for all your input so far.

I'm considering getting the stax 001, a grado/alessandro, and the ety 4p/s, and then returning one or more (or none) of them. The etys are a given (unless I can't stand the fit of them), but for the other phones it's anyone's best guess.

Some more questions:

1) I do love the grado sound, but the highs can be a litle harsh for me. Can I expect some mellowing out of that when I get my JMT amp?

2) Are the alessandro ms-1 and ms-2 less bright (harsh) than the sr125 and 325?

3) Custom ear molds for the etys. How much (ballpark) does it cost to have this done by an audiologist? How much (and how) does it improve the sound?

Are there any other contenders I should know about? In order of importance:

#1: PRAT
#2: smoothness, clarity, extension, etc.
