Those do look like wood 325i's...though then 'inner cylinder' looks longer.

Is this John?

The enclosures as well as pads seem to be a lot bigger than the RS-1's. I also bet the soundstage is HUGE and the comfy factor is preety high.

It'd be like coming out of the closet...

"Mum... Dad... I've got something important I need to tell you... I like Audio-Technica......"

Hmmm......

I would not mind to have the huge bowl pads as an optional accessories eventhough the sound is inferior

And if it's dinner time but you just can't stop listening, you can whip one of 'em off and eat your fries out of it.

I remember listening to those headphones in '01 with a Dolby Headphone encoded DVD playing through a laptop. So far the best surround sound I have ever heard using headphones.

Probably never or they would have been in the (almost) last five years.Along with the wireless Grados (I thought a bit pricey) a good idea that never quite made it to prime time.
There is also something to be said for keeping a product lineup compact and static instead of trying to be all things to all people which usually means mass production for a mass market.More than one audio company has gone down that road to ruin

Actually Apheared had me going nuts trying to keep up with everything he wanted to show me and every time we made it back to the Headroom display it was "you just missed so and so".
BAM off like a shot !
I had to hit the lounge and have a couple of brews just to calm down

Not a whole lot of feedback online about this which to me is very surprising considering what I (and it seems you also) thought to be a very successful "debut" of a specialised headphone targeted to the home theater crowd.A crowd way larger than the Ultra-High-End-audio crew.
It was not a lack of folks in the Headroom area which to me seemed to be quite popular so I can only think there was so much going on (wall of headphones

) that the somewhat small and unassuming display maybe overlooked.

From my personal viewpoint :

1-The Grados did Movie FX extrmely well.Maybe this was the Grado signature dynamics or maybe some special voicing.Either way dead on for exitement

2-The large earpads that back then I had dubbed "The Big muffs" felt like a pair of comfy slippers for the ears. Not hot,a real problem with HT-Cans but a soft delicate touch that would seem to be ideal for the average movie length of 2+ hours.Only time would tell for sure but ? Seems like not likely to happen.

3-The Dolby Headphone encoding directly to the DVD seemed to this listener to be far better than any add-on "decoder" and is as it was then in my opinion the best way to get surround sound to headphones.
The sound mixer knows where they want the directional cues and by being encoded to disc there is a consistancy sample-to-sample that no user selectable/user settings modified decoder could ever duplicate unless by pure accident. Why this is not the norm baffles me when you consider all the crap put on a DVD just to fill up the unsused spaces

4-If the above headphones were used with Dolby Headphone encoded discs and an X-Dream wireless transmitter/Receiver My search would be ended.I would have for me personally the ultimate in Home theater Headphone Listening.
The search would be over and instead it would be all about the experience and movie critique, not "so how was the gear ?".movies should be watched and enjoyed if a good one just like music should be listened to instead of the gear,

As usual just my opinion.
