I might suggest the Infrasonic Blow5D's they include a high end DAC so you can drive the monitors right from a digital source -great touch. The sound quality and measured specs on these monitors are excellent. I have a couple associates that use them in their studios and they love them.
don't have a pair myself, but the quad 12l actives have a cult-like following on one of the other forums...they're near your price & wouldn't require an amp...
I would suggest some bookshelf speakers and a desktop amplifier.
A good budget model is the Class D tweak city Gizmo. I recommend this unit alot because it has great sound for the price and has a dedicated subwoofer output so you can add a sub to your system and have a 2.1 system.
