Are there any freeware programs that support modifying ID3 tags without updating the timestamp? I'm trying to add tags to some FLAC files but don't want the dates changed.

What be 'timestamp's?

The timestamp is the date and time of the file's creation (ex. 2/1/2009 7:17 PM). In most cases, editing a file's ID3 updates the file with the current date, which I'm trying to avoid.

I see, why exactly do you want to edit this? Are you taking your mp3-player on a time-travelling jaunt?

Hahah, no... There are a few reasons, but the main reason is that I sometimes like to go back and see what I was listening to at a certain time period. The other reason is that an incremental backup will see the old files as new files, which can cause issues.

Might not be exactly what you want but try audioscrobbling your music, last.fm is very popular.
Heh, my top listens in the last year both have 397 listens...how wierd.

Are you talking 'bout
- "Windows Explore" view or
- view from some audio software file property data field?

If Explore then, just mouse_right_click the column name bar and select another 'attribute' to be shown ... there should be one named as "Date Created" which should keep the information of the file creation date. When you then copy/move (/backup) these files, the Date modified stays untouched when date created gets updated.

Right, I see that the 'date created' won't change, but most programs look at 'date modified.' I know the program Tag&Rename can preserve the timestamp, but it's not freeware. I don't need all of its features, I just want to update ID3s while preserving the timestamp.

ive heard of once called "tag and rename" or something like that. when i last saw an advert for it, it was boasting about its ability to change details on "dodgy downloads" quickly and easily. therefore i think its perfectly acceptable to get a "dodgy download" of tag and rename and use a keygen on it.
although ive never used it, i have a mate who swears by it.

Dunno if this aids you.

I got those last 4 tags with 'foo_playback_custom'. Even without that, you could add a playstamp meta-tag[to any files you want].
I'd at least use the same name & date format.

How about turning back the clock of your computer, alter the ID3 tags, then turn it forward to "today" again?

Actually, not automatic, but it'd make sense to create your own tags[like titled 'Year/Month played'] with whatever data in.

To show the data it'd be '%Year/Month played'%' as title-format, en foobar.

Tag&Rename does exactly what I want--it has an option called "Don't change file timestamp on saving tags." Perfect!

Edit: Except the changes I'm making to the tags aren't showing up in Foobar... Does it matter that these are FLAC files?

Edit #2: Even when I delete all of the tags in Tag&Rename, tag information created in Foobar still displays in Foobar. T&R doesn't seem to be doing anything...

Edit #3: I disabled the "don't change timestamp" option and now it works. The one feature I wanted from this program might be broken.
