I've had a pair of Koss UR40's laying around that I had removed the foam from, angled the earpads, and kramer modded. A couple days ago I decided to try them with my iPhone 4 with the EQU app, an LOD cable, and a fiio E5. After some slight EQ work they actually sound pretty damn good. Much better than a $40 headphone would normally sound. The ridiculous amount of extra warmth and mid-bass is now gone, some sub-bass was added back in, and the sound is actually very clean and detailed now.
I had already ordered a fiio E17, and an AKG Q701(should both arrive tomorrow), but in the meantime I figured I'd play with these some more. I doubt I'll regret buying the E17 and the Q701 once I hear them, but what I am hearing right now sounds very acceptable. My goal was to make them sound more like my Vsonic GR01 IEM's, and it's pretty much there. I'm hoping the Q701's sound close, but somehow better, I'm sure they will.
Point of the story: Cheap headphones can sound pretty good.
