im not gonna state im a pro.
but ive listen to both stock cards before. liked both.
read about how you can mod these cards with new caps and jitters.

which would you guys prefer for just straight playback.. im not gonna do recordings.

obviously both cards would be hooked into amps and yada yada yada.

When I get my Twisted Pear Opus DAC built, I a going to mod my ESI to output I2S directly to the DAC. I believe this will yield possibly one of the best sounding computer sources period.

which emu card is better BTW..
the old v1 with firewire
or the newer v2 without firewire?

They both have the same performance. v2 is the RoHS-compliant revision. The Firewire output was replaced with an EDI output for connecting to a MicroDock M, essentially turning the 1212M into a 1616M.
