I'm considering the same, actually. The output of my Micro is fairly weak, and to have the output match that of the CD and Radio, I have to have the volume all the way up on the Micro. Which sounds distorted. If I run the volume on the Micro at about 2/3 it sounds much better.
So I'm thinking of adding a small amp behind my aux jack, with a low gain setting. Nothing exposed... I would test to find the best volume setting, then solder in fixed resistors in place of the pot- sort of like the original cmoy. For power, I'm planning on using an LDO regulator to bring the car's 13.5-14.5vdc down to perhaps 12 or even 9 volts. The amp would be concealed within the console, out of sight and mind.
