i think i'm definitely leaning towards speakers-only. i think i could up my price range a bit. the triangle's sound about perfect; and i'd definitely be up for modding my t-amp. can someone help me with a list of reccommended high-efficiency solutions in the $300ish (flexible) range? and where should i look for used ones? ebay? audiogon? i really want to manage a good deal.

I guess the reasons I listed are pretty elementary stuff. I almost never listen to headphones anymore, though I still like to hang out here--headphone people seem to know more about hi-fi than loudspeaker people for some reason. Perhaps it's the lack of room acoustics that helps simplify discussion since room acoustics in typical in-room situations might account more for performance than many loudspeaker enthusiasts give credit to. But, again, that doesn't apply as much to close range, often lower volume, listening with monitors.

i'd be listening just like this a lot of the time (i.e. when my wife is home), cuz my music is often to loud for her. i follow you here. my speakers are on cinder blocks (acousticly inert/reduce vibration) on my heavy butcher-block desk, on either side of my computer moniter, about two feet apart. i think this setup is pretty perfect for listening at my desk (and it happens to image pretty well for the rest of my apt as well). tweeters are about ear-level. i need to get some fabric to drape over my ghetto cinders
