i am guessing that the p to s adds 75 ohms of resistance to the headphone jack. i base this on the fact that etymotic sell a p to s adapter that does exactly that.
Like any capitalist enterprise, they charge what they think the market will pay - cost has nothing to do with it. (just ask MonsterCable!) If there is a limited distribution channel for these products to the West, and demand exists in the West, then their is no reason for the folks who control the supply to sell for any less. However, if the distribution channel opens wider, or viable competition enters the same market, or demand drops, then the prices will come down, or the supply will decrease as the mfrs look for better returns.
The cost to the mfr and the local price in China is irrelevant if the product can't be moved to the Western market in quantity.
Now, if Costco were to cut a deal with the mfr for a million units a month...
