another lesser-known exception would be the Kenwood VH-600. That thing is amazing! It's got HDCD, a subwoofer-out, lots of inputs and outputs, great sound quality, a 20 watt class A/AB speaker amp, and suprisingly good speakers (real wood baffle, very nice five-way binding posts on the back).

I said, "I'd avoid Onkyo and Harmon Kardon for mostly cost issues." so yeah, in general, I'd say their stuff is overpriced. They've also, in recent years, come down in quality control. Both companies were once known for making exceptionally good quality electronics and this is no longer the case. Some of their stuff does sound good but I believe in general your money will go further with one of the lines I mentioned and that if you want to spend more, you should consider a seperate pre/pro and amplifier(s).
