Greetings HTML wizards. I am trying to setup a really basic web site for my dad, but I can't figure out FrontPage. All I want is to create a homepage with about 5-6 links to sub pages, but there is no wizard for setting this up, and the screens I get are more confusing than anything. I click on themes to make a theme with boxes and links, but it won't display anything like that at all.

What I need is some basic steps to get this setup rather quickly. Some rudimentary steps would be fine. I can fine tune later once the site gets up.

Thanks.

Doug

Close everything first in Frontpage

File -- New -- Page or Web

Select Empty Web and Empty web again if you want blank pages

or

Personal Web and it will open a new web with some pages you can play with

If you need more help let me know.

John,

As to the Personal Web, that's what I did, and that's why I'm confused. There is nothing to let me know that I am on the home page, index, or any other page. Plus, it creates three html files that I tried to rename, but I don't know how to make links on teh home page, much less how to make a home page for the web site.

It might be easier to start with a totally blank web.

File - New- Empty web - Empty Web

Now create your home page

File- new - Page or web- Page templates - Frames template- Pick one you want.

the first page will automatically be named index

You can then create other new pages and make links to them.

If you use the 3 frames one you can have the links page on each subsequent page.

Try this and see if that helps

To get an idea of how badly I butchered the attempt, I had three links on my home page, at least I think it's my home page, and here's what it looks like on the net now:

You are just about there. 30-40 more hours of work and you will have a nice working site. It is easy to get started a real challenge to make a good one that people want to return to.

It's only for storage of photos and files. How do I add a link to the home page so that I can click on it and open new pages on the site.

I'm also confused as to why I create a folder for the site under an FTP program, yet I can't get into that folder and to the photos there thru the web.

After you have created a page with the pictures,

Type something on your home page, highlight it, right click it.

At the bottom you will see Hyperlink properties. Click it.

A frame will pop up showing the page with the pictures. select it

That is all there is to it for a simple hyperlink.

On your picture page do the same thing in reverse so you can get back to the index page.

If you can see it in the directory that comes up on the left of Frontpage you can use it and the pictures. If you cannot see it I think you will need to use the import function to get them into the web page folder.

I hope I understand what you are saying

John,

Actually, I can't see the stuff in FP, but I think it finally penetrated my thick skull. I figured out how to add a new page and then link it thru a hyperlink on the home page. I'll keep working on it so that I can get this done quickly.

OBTW, if I already have a bunch of files, photos, and other such, how do I include that so that it is accessible on the net? I ask as I can see the stuff in FTP, but not using the net. It's already on the site and on my hard drive, so I have to figure out how to get it to where you can actually see it using the net now. Or so that I can link photos to places like here.
