There are a few newer bands that would qualify.. Mastodon and Opeth.

As for older, classic bands, I can't think of many that didn't release a few clunkers.. even Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, Scorpions, Slayer, Metallica.. they've all released albums that didn't do anything for me. Everyone has their own "cutoff" points... with Maiden it was SEVENTH SON.. with Priest, it was DEFENDERS.. To be honest, I'm not much of a metal head anymore. I like a lot of heavy music.. but seems like a lot of the bands I like that are heavy aren't really considered 'metal' or else I'm just not able to spend money on all their albums (Katatonia, for example.. I love their first 3 albums, but I haven't heard anything since..).. there's Acid Bath, but they only put out 2 albums.

oh yes, they were great too. still remember the pictures from the show where they tried to 'out-bleed' Eyehategod. Ouch.

the 20-minute loops they tacked onto their albums' last tracks used to drive me crazy, though
