What exactly is the difference between normal flash memory cards, and the Magic Gate cards?

im asking because the PSP supports magic gate, but the cards are stupidly expensive, are they actually any alternatives with PSP other than using magicgate?

You'll be hard pressed to find a MemoryStick Duo that's not Magicgate. It's just a stupid DRM scheme by Sony for their proprietary ATRAC3 codec. Just use MP3's and fuggeddaboutit.

because sony likes to make it annoying for the rest of it by using their own. for example their cameras use magicgate aswell, why not use sd? because then you would buy their cards.

its just sony's marketing try to ignor it the best you can

you still have to use magic gate but you can buy cheaper cards made by different companies like this one:
