Just got one of these to play with. It would appear that I can't take the unit out of mute without using the remote which would mean that if the remote was lost I would never be able to get the unit to play without the remote. Is there a way to do this without the remote?
The way the manual describes it's operation it sounds to me that the unit unmutes itself after the timer is up and the light turns green. But I have to use the remote every time the unit is turned off and back on to take it out of mute.

Also does the standby light stay red when using headphones? It would seem like it would do the same(Turn green) no matter what outputs you were using?

I have the same pre-amp and if the monitor switch is down it will go out of mute once the tubes has a chance to warm up. Yes if you are using the headphones the pre-amp will mute the outputs since by design both headphones and the main outputs can not be driven at the same time. Some users have done a wiring change that behaviour.

I appreciate the reply John. Even when my monitor switch is down and the standby LED on the left turns green, my unit will stay in mute (red LED on the right flashes) until you use the remote and unmute it. That's why I'm worried about losing the remote. Without the remote I can't unmute the unit.
I understand that the outputs on the back are muted when the headphone input is used on the front. Does your standby light turn back to red when your headphones are plugged in?

The photo-pot is prone to failure. I replaced the whole mechanism with a nice, DACT stepped attenuator. Sure, you lose the remote control feature, but it feels like a million bucks & (more importantly) works flawlessly!

Apparently RCA remotes will work with Melos.
I also got the following advice here not long ago:

If you have a learning universal remote that you use the original remote to program the universal remote you should not have a problem. My original remote batteries when dead and the remote lost the codes but I found it as 11111 My original Melos Sha Gold remote has a P/N of URC-1030B01 which can be found here at $5.

Buy ONE FOR ALL URC-1030B04 URC1030 UNIVERSAL -URC1030B01 TV Remote Control

Yes the standby turns red when a heaphone in plug in. The one situation where I have to un-mute by remote is when I leave the headphone in before the next power on. otherwise my Melos SHA-GOLD will umute at near the three minute mark after power is turn on.

That's what I thought. I wonder why mine doesn't do that? I wonder if I can either bypass it or modify it?
