Just purchased the MEelec M9s after my Creative EP-630s broke down and I was expecting a more balanced sound, as the general consensus seems to be that the EPs are very bassy and the M9s are more refined in bass.

However, I plug the M9s into my iPod (using the mid-size rubber tips) and the bass is significantly louder than on the EP, and it effectively washes out the other parts of the spectrum.

I plugged the M9s into the computer and found it to be much more balanced, and plugged it back into the iPod with "Bass Reducer" EQ setting enabled, and they sounded almost the same.

Why are the M9s bassier than the EPs on my iPod only?

Of my two portable sources, I find the iPod 120Gb Classic to be noticeably more bassy than the Blackberry (no EQ on either). I like the M9 with the iPod better than the NE-7M.

Have you burned-in the M9? Some say that helps, but mine seemed pretty good right out of the box, although my comparison is with the NuForce which are also considered bass-rich. The NE-7M definitely benefit from burn-in.
