I just opened these and started listening to a bunch of genres: hard electro-house, some brostep, rap, etc. The bass isn't rattling my ears.  
 
Did I just overhype these? Maybe I need to play around with the EQ? Because out of the box, I don't hear bass that shakes my ears. 
 
I doubt my pair is defective or fake...

I think I was expecting these to be a subwoofer on my head... I have to say, I'm kind of disappointed. :/

There isn't really another headphone under $150 with the same bass quantity.
 
In other words you're probably not going to get the sound you want without spewing out another few hundred $$$ on an amplifier with a bass boost (some FiiO models have this) and a capable headphone with the potential for tonnes of quality bass (Beyerdynamic DT770 springs to mind).
 
Pairing the XB500 with such a headphone amp would certainly also work, but all you'll get is a lot of mono-tone boomy bass.

I take everything I said back. I used some components for foobar suggested by RPGwizard and these things sound great. 
 
They sound like poo out of the box.
