MCINTOSH LABS INTRODUCES NEW HEADPHONE AMP MODEL MHA 100
Jun 16, 2015 at 8:02 AM Post #991 of 1,316
Also would like to try some new cans in the future, seeking a bit more "soul".
Any sugestions for a confortable pair of headphones that would "complement" the HD800? Anyone tried the new Oppo PM-3, for example?

Cheers all,

I would recommend trying the MHP1000's, these have become my favorite cans on the MHA100 by far. I honestly haven't had time to listen to them lately though with the baby starting to crawl around. I've mainly been listening to the speaker side of the MHA through my XR50's. I love the XR50 sound, these speakers without a doubt punch above their weight class.

Who here streams music through the MHA? What is your delivery/transport system? I run Tidal and Sirius XM through a Sonos player and as much as I love Sirius XM, for some reason it just sounds dull through the Sonos. It's not my internet connection as Tidal streams like a champ and sounds great.

If you want a closed portable then yes i would go with the PM-3. I like it better then the Focal Professional and the B&W. They got even better with the Silver Dragon cable.

For a full size closed I agree with griff609, the MHP1000 are great and my favorite close can. IMO they are like the closed version of the HD800 soundstage and detail wise but with more bass.

If you're looking for a closed portable like the PM-3, I'd recommend checking out the Bowers & Wilkins P7. Warmer tonally than the HD800 for sure, but with good quality everything. Bass, mids, treble, soundstage (for a closed portable), build, aesthetics, etc. And they can be demoed at Best Buy Magnolia and certain Apple stores

The Fostex TH900's are comparable to my electrostatic rig.  The first week of using them (feed from ygg DAC to Woo WA7 amp), they were good but didn't move me that much.  By the end of the second week, I was in love and I'd argue they're comparable to my Stax SR-007A's out of my KGST amp.

Good luck.

I can't help you with the MHA, but I can tell you that sat radio is a pretty poor signal.  I stream Deezer Elite (FLAC files) via digital coax to my DAC's and it sounds very good.  There's no way Sirius will compare.  I have a really nice Harman Kardon 19-speaker setup in my vehicle and Sirius sounds like crap while a bluetooth connection streaming music off my iPhone (Beats or my ripped tunes) is hugely better.

Yeah I stream Sirius XM over the internet to the MHA but in my car its similar, a bit lackluster. I usually plug in my phone and stream Tidal in the car and I can hear the difference. I have a pretty kick ass Harman Kardon speaker system in my car too!

For those of you who stream from a PC or Mac, which usb cable do u use?
I have first heard a Audioquest Carbon, but not with the MHA 100, and found a huge difference versus a normal cable
With MHA 100, heard a Furutech GT2 versus a cheap cabel, and did not found that much difference, and end up not buying.
Anyone can share which brands of cable are being used with th MHA 100 and results?

My digital chain is:

Mac Mini (late 2009 server version with 120 SSD for software and 1T HDD, 8 Gb RAM, external linear power supply) running either JRiver 20 or Audirvana 2).
WireWorld Platinum USB cable
iUSB.
WireWorld Platinum USB cable
iPurifier
Bricasti M1 DAC.

I am going analog balanced form the Bricasti M1 to the MHA100.

I recently got the MHA100 and am very pleased with it. My speakers are the KEF LS50's and my headphones are the HD800's.

My only concern is that when I turn off the amplifier before shutting down Windows I also get a potential error message about the USB connection that is not a real error. My guess is that this is a Windows driver issue. Because other's have been bothered by the same message I think it is something that should be fixed by the people who make the driver. After all, if I turn off my printer I don't get a message complaining about that. This is more than likely only a problem on Windows.

In any event I could not be happier with my new system. The MHA100 is the perfect compliment to my desktop setup. My previous setup used a Headroom Mico DAC and Micro Amp. Now I can play both headphones and desktop speakers with just one beautifully designed and robust instrument. For my money the sound quality is superb!

Hmmm ... I just bought a 60GB SSD for the Mac Mini. I hope that'll be enough.
I also just picked up a Newertech Ministack Max with a 1TB SSD to go all SSD.
While I was at it, I couldn't help but buy 16GB of RAM and a Teradak external power supply, all of which is waiting for me to get the tools out.
Which power supply did you go for and how were your results if you don't mind me asking?

60GB SSD for just the software should be more than enough. 1 TB SSD is awesome!!!
My power supply is the Joule from Mojo Audio. The sound is cleaner because the floor noise is much lower .
For the Ministack use the firewire connection. Don't use the USB. Use the USB ONLY to connect to your DAC for the best results.

I wanted to use the DAC From the Mc via line, well, preamp out, to drive the rest of my system. ...

I just discovered that the preamp out is muted unless I switch the load to 'Speaker'. And then that is turned off & muted if I plug a headphone into the amp. SO, it's physically impossible to us the Mha100 as a DAC for other amps while I use the internal amp.

...seriously disappointed. This changes everything. :frowning2:

completely agree... this is actually the main reason I am keeping my D100 as it lets you drive both headphones and preamp out and line out at the same time.  It has a button for muting the pre-amp on the front.  The only issue with it is the headphone amp isn't anything special.  They really need to put out a D1000 with a 10x power output on the headphone jack as compared to the D100.  Tubes would be nice too.

It turns out the OS only needs a tad over 11GB so the 60GB drive was more than enough. I totally failed in reducing files in the original drive to clone it to the new SSD and completely ballsed up the transfer. To cut a long story short, the hardware is now all fine but I'm re-ripping my CD collection. All over 2500 of them.
Those Joule power supplies look nice but were a bit spendy for me. I decided to try the waters with the Teradak. It's an improvement which now has me lusting with curiosity after yours.
