McChanson amps tube rolling thread

To kick start it, I will share my newly acquired GEC 807 ATS25 as power tubes in the Super Gold UltimatE. Drivers are 6S3P-DR and Tesla EZ81 rectifier. Caps used are Mundorf Mcap Supreme S/G/O.

I have always regarded my Telefunken EL12 spez, EL39, Philips Miniwatt EL34 metal base and Philips Miniwatt EL34 double D getters brown base as the best of the EL series. Whilst the GEC 807 is just one day into burn in, I regard the tone to be the equal of the other 4. Different of course but equally good. Most prominent is midrange and midbass. Lovely texture in the DNA of GEC tubes.

I have ordered 2 other variants of 807 tube.

5B/254A (This has the same base as the classic 807, so you can use the same adapter as the 807 to 6L6 adapter - wire will be a bit long)
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/310087990405?

5B/254M (This is the loctal equivalent of the above tube - you need a different adapter)
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/310087990401
and the adapter required for it

5B/255M (This is the equivalent of the above 2 but without the top cap - you need a different adapter)

Great 807 tube references - thanks

Very nice.

Just having a bit of trouble with KT63.

The complete black Kt63 Gec at Langerex was a bit quieter.
And got a replacement delivered on Tuesday.
The pair is optically different but also from Gec, unfortunately there was a tube in the 2nd set that did not work directly in both amplifiers.
Now I'm getting another one sent to me with the hope that it will work.
My 2nd pair of Gec Kt63 which I also bought is on the way away, which will probably only reach me next week.
I have then made a working set from both sets.
I could hardly hear any difference between black or grey glass.

6BQ7A tubes arrive tomorrow, I'm curious to see how the Hitachi and Haltron do.
At the moment the EL34 tubes are still running in the Ultigreg and in the other amplifier KT88.
Both very good despite burn in.
With both pairings I can actually hear minimal differences from the Gustard R26 Dac when it is either running via Lan or I2S connected to the Singxer Su 2.
Via Lan it is clearer, fuller, somewhat brighter and nicely powerful.
With the SU2 there is a little less of this but more quietness, it seems a little tidier, a touch warmer and not quite as resolving.
I never noticed this before, but I have for a few days now.

You have quite a bit of tubes there already Greg. I bought 3 pairs of tubes from Langrex yesterday. 2 pairs of 5B/254M and 1 pair of 5B/254A.

The GEC 807 is coming along nicely and burning in. It will stay put in the Super Gold Ultimate for a long long time because it is sounding great.

Mundorf > 6BW4 > EC86 > 6L6 🎶🎵👂🤩

This lucky combination produces a nice and powerful tone.

Your photography is very clear and sharp. Nice picture and that is indeed a stunning combination. That pair of Sylvania 6L6 is newer than new and that's a lovely pair of RTC EC86. :relaxed:

Guess it's a 6L6 day. :relaxed: I have to hear what you guys are hearing so I have the same tubes and Mundorf on except I have 6S3P as drivers. These little tubes have proved to be a real gem.

Yes to both 6S3P and 6L6. That doesn't mean it's thin and lacking in texture and colour. There's bounce in the bass from the 6L6. If there's one important thing I like about Ultimate is the old school tube amp tone. Colour temperature and texture is so inviting. Yet so clear and detailed.
