Maybe it is time to put DAC's into new subforum?

and since when DAC is source? it is a piece of chips worthless without transport, it is like making forum about turntables into forum about tonearms only. it becomes boring for me, i know everyone will not agree, but i think DAC's should be placed into separate section.

Amen!

I visit this subforum daily only to find threads on DACs!

Does anybody use a dedicated cd player anymore???

Only the few of us who actually like listening to high quality music CDs in a quiet environment instead of a hotchbotch of equipment producing music from a computer

But if you start splitting up DACs and cdplayers and turntables and tonearms the forums will get very small and lonely. If you come here expecting a usual barrgae of DAC related questions you won't be disapointed

I agree. Head-Fi's value as a loafing tool would decrease substantially if there are more sub-sections. There is always the Search tool if someone is interested only in reading about DACs.

I quite like the variety in these more generalized forums.

I haven't been in here in a long time until today. I am trying to find out about SACD/DVD audio players. I am not too happy wading through a bunch of DAC threads to find a thread about what I want to learn about. Besides, I thought DACs were for computer stuff as much as for CDPs.
I think there is enough interest in DACs to warrant another sub forum.

Well, the forum is called "Dedicated Source Components." But I can see what you mean and I wouldn't mind seeing DAC's in a sub-forum of some sort (It seems that this whole source forum is composed of ~80% DAC threads).

We already have a distinct forum just for computer-as-source components, so if we make a separate DAC sub-forum would we have to combine the 2 existing source forums into one (Since you can use a DAC with both CDPs/TTs and soundcards)?

I agree with this as well. If anything, DAC discussion should go in the computer section. I think when most people think about a source, they are referring to a stand alone CD player that already has a built in DAC.

Just my .02 cents.

Dacs are just aswell for cd players (or other transports) as for computers, placing them in the computer section would be a mistake.

Why should there be a seperate section for dacs? I understand that most of the threads here are actually about dacs, but that doesn't warrant a seperate subforum. Most of the posts in the headphone section are about dynamics, not about electrostats but is that a reason to give them a seperate subforum aswell? Dac's are exactly what this forum is about, along with all other source components other than soundcards or htpc's which belong in the computer section.

Mmm.. no! Viva la Squeezebox!

And I think the source subforum is perfectly happy as it is. But I don't usually read it so I guess my opinion doesn't count too heavily.

There's a different distinction between electrostatic amp vs. dynamic amp and DAC vs. CDP/TT/"Full Source." An electrostatic amp is as much of an amp as is a dynamic amp (In the sense that they both take the same place in the signal chain and function similarly with regard to independence/dependence on other components). A DAC isn't as much of a source as is a TT or CDP. They don't occupy the same place in the signal chain and the DAC is a component of a CDP. Kind of like this:

Amplifiers:
Electrostatic
-SS
-Tube
Dynamic
-SS
-Tube

Sources:
Turntable
-Tonearm
-etc.
CDP
-DAC
-Output stage
-etc.

(Note, I'm not saying that's how this forum should be organized; that's just an example of what I was saying with regard to the electrostatic/dynamic amp relation being different compared to CDP/DAC relationship)

Of course you can use a DAC with a CDP, sound card, etc. but we already have a separate forum dedicated to computer-as-source components, and the vast majority of DAC discussion takes place outside the computer-as-source component forum.
