Hey guys,

I have a PS3 on my desk for watching Bluray movies soon to be joined by the new PS4 which will play UHD BDs. The problem is that most BDs don't have a 2.0 PCM track and DACs don't have HDMI inputs. I have a few options, 1) using optical which has limited bandwidth and doesn't allow for full 24bit 192KHz to my DAC 2) using HDMI 7.1 > HDMI audio extractor > SPDIF to my DAC 3) Using HDMI 7.1 on BD but telling the PS3 to limit HDMI to 2.0 > HDMI extractor > SPDIF > DAC.

Which one is the best option?

Thanks.

Set the PS3/PS4 to stereo audio, when you want to output audio thru the gaming console's optical port (sending audio to the DAC).
You should at least get up to 2.0 PCM 24-bit/96K digital audio.

Will the PS3 do a good job of turning the 7.1 on the BD to 2.0?

Thanks for the help

Good or bad, not like you really have much of a choice.

You could get a Yamaha receiver, which comes with Silent Cinema, Yamaha's own headphone surround sound technology.
Run HDMI from the gaming console to the Yamaha, plug headphones into Yamaha's headphone jack.
Which headphone do you have?
Or are planning on buying?
