I bought an Audio Technica ATH-700 in Taiwan and have also ER-6. The ATH sounds dark and muted from Phillips PCDP & totally dead from earphone out on my Sangean radio---it's like a Tivoli.
Where's the best place to start: with $300-500 headphone amp or with better sound source. Ergonomics, weight, and space are issues, so I'm not keen to buy a CD player.
I've been thinking about the two Ray Samuels portables, or Jan's Porta Corda, or building Doc Dan Bottlehead's S.E.X, a 2 watt SE amp and head phone amp. Is this right range or should I be looking at head phone amps more in the $100 range, like the Meta.
