I live in the midrange!
I just picked up his most recent album, Bubblegum, as recommended by Uncut magazine. It's not bad....sort of like Lou Reed meets Trent Reznor. Apparently he's some kind of new rock n'aer-do-well. Anyone have any thoughts on his music??

Whiskey for the Holy Ghost is quite good, Field Songs is so-so, I ended up selling it. Check out Dust, last album of Screaming Trees, his old band, it's a lost grunge classic, truly excellent.

Yeah, big favorite of mine this year. Might wind up close to album of the year for me since it's really been growing on me lately. I think it wound up #6 on the UNCUT best of the year list. Great lyrics throughout and fantastic music. Gets by with a little help from his friends including the always loveable Polly Jean Harvey who pops up on two of the most majestic tracks ("Hit the City" and "Come to Me"), plus Izzy and Duff from GNR on backing vocals ("Strange Religion"). And of course his old QOTSA buddies, Josh Homme and Nick Oliveri, popping out here and there. And Afghan Whigs/Twilight Singers leader Greg Dulli puts in some time in the mix as well. It rocks and seethes with lots of bluesy energy throughout. I really liked Field Songs too, and the more unified or consistent sound he's getting nowadays, but it was kind of subdued compared to the old days or to this one. I would've liked it more if he'd let loose more like he does here. But it has some very good songs, including a cool, bluesy instrumental I love, with lots of texture and ambience, called "Blues for D". But what a voice. Just gets better all the time. The ravages of whiskey and cigarettes. Mama don't let your babies grow up to sound like this, but one of my favorite singers right now. You can almost see the words come out of his mouth. The Chris Goss production on this new one won't let it be mistaken for an audiophile disc, but it does sound right for the music. Kind of a Tom Waits junkyard percussion sound on much of it.

mark lanegan has a longer history than trent reznor, so he's not that new a rock 'n'aer-do-well (i like that term, though)

i second the recommendation for "dust" and the other screaming trees albums. this is heavier stuff (musically, not lyrically) than his solo work, but it's melodic and beautiful. the term 'psychedelic grunge' comes to mind...

"Sweet Oblivion" is quite possibly the most played CD in my collection. I like his solo work, but man, I wish the Screaming Trees were still making music.

I've bought Dust, and am waiting for Whiskey for the Holy Ghost. Both are excellent...I've been spinning Dust all day, and I listened to Whiskey on Rhapsody last night.

Good advice...thanks.

-Dust
-Sweet Oblivian

Both are very good Cds for 1990's Screaming Trees, you can buy them very cheap used at Amazon etc. They kinda got lost in the shuffle behind frenzy for Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Sound Garden etc.

Also there are good Screaming Trees albums from 1980's on SST label which are nicely summed up on:
-SST Anthology 1985-89 (21 track collection from 3 albums + EPs)

Don't have any solo work by Lanegan.

On a related note I really love this collection:
Mudhoney - March to the Fuzz (52 tracks that definitely rock)

Finally picked up Bubblegum. So far, of what I've heard, I'd rank this his best. He posesses at truly great voice, deeeeeeeeep, deep deep, he makes his every pronouncement sound profound. This is a very very good record. Mastered loud, but still sounds good.

Indeed, Bubblegum is truly great.
I think it hard to sort out a ranking of Mark Lanegan's albums, speaking mostly of the last three ... I'll take care of you (covers ...never mind

), Field Songs, Bubblegum.

I really don't have the heart to try it ... but If I were to be forced to it ... it would be the chronological order inverted. Or perhaps the straight chronological order.
