Hello,
Has anyone out there ever compared the Redbook CD performance of the Marantz CD5001 CD player to the Redbook CD performance of the Marantz SA8001 CD/SACD player?
If so, was the CD performance of the SA8001 sonically superior to the CD5001, or about equal?
Please comment on the on the sonic differences between the two on Redbook CD.
Thanks!

I'm rather curious as well, as I have a Marantz CD5400 (probably very close to the newer 5001), and I'd like to know how it stacks up to the 8001 (and previously, the 8260).

Guess I will find out first hand!
I am ordering a used Marantz SA8001 on Audiogon to try out and also compare to the CD5001.
I will try and post some results when I get it.

Update:
I am expecting my used Marantz SA8001 on Monday.
But due to being busy all day Monday and Tuesday, I will not really get to evaluate it until Wednesday.
I am looking very forward to it!

In the meantime I can offer a little insight, hopefully.
I own a CD5001 and had seriously conciddered buying the SA8001 at the time I bought the former. After some research and contact with Marantz, retailers, and a few owners of both the general concensus was this:
For standard Redbook cd playing the SA models offer no real upgrade in performance to the CD models.
However, the proof is in the pudding...

I guess I will find out for sure next week.
If the SA8001 offers no improvement over the CD5001 on Redbook CD's, I guess I will sell it.
It will also be very interesting to see [hear] how their headphone jack outputs compare to one another.
I will post the results next Thursday.

I've seen a few 5001's on Audiogon in that range lately. Definitely a bargain, assuming it performs on par with the prior 5400 (no reason why it wouldn't).

It's a decent player in it's own right, and I figure at that price you could always upgrade to a separate DAC down the road.
