Remember what I said about the Ear 4?

Quote:

The Good:

Stunning appearance
Affordable
Very quiet
Decent sound for the money
Is a preamp and headphone amp
Improves with tube rolling and burn-in

The Bad:

Chassis gets pretty warm
Bass could be deeper
Soundstage is a bit small
Vocals are its weak point

Scratch that.

Lloyd sent me a replacement transformer that I swapped in this evening. The difference is dramatic! Houston, we have bass! The soundstage has also expanded and even the slightly aggressive nature has been tamed.

I really like the Ear 4 now. Further impressions to come...

What kind of tubes do they use again?

The Mapletree Ear uses four tubes:
5751/12AX7A, 2x 12B4A, 12X4

The Ear+ uses three tubes:
5751/12AX7A, 2x12B4A

BTW, if anyone's interested, I'm going to be receiving a Mapletree Line 2m preamp tomorrow (it's an interesting new Mapletree product), and I'd be willing to write up my thoughts about it once it gets burned in. Doesn't have a headphone amp though.

lol nick...if god came down from heaven and gave you the ultimate preamp, you would put black gate caps and holco resistors on it!!
