It's interesting what one can glean from a week's reflection. A week away, that is. I'm now back in front of my precious headphone rig, and after eight days of listening to HD-590s and KSC-55s powered by an iPod's internal amp, I'd like to revise my opinion of my Adcom's bass.
As I mentioned above, my entire rig is now fed cleaned and isolated power courtesty of a Monster Power HTS-5100 Mk II. Generally speaking, the results of such a device should be subtle at best. A first, what I noticed was pretty subtle ...it seemed like the texture of music had been improved. I listen to a lot of ambient, where texture is fundamentally important, so I was pleased, but hardly blown away.
I have previously complained that the bass from my Adcom was plenty deep and certainly didn't lack impact, but it just wasn't as visceral as the output from my humble Edirol UA-5. It's been well-documented here on head-fi that the HD-650s are very sensitive to everything upstream of them, and respond significantly to what can be subtle changes. I know less about how the Adcom, but it's certainly a top shelf CDP, and will scale well with the rest of the system. What is now blindingly clear to me is that the bass output of my rig is now bordering on skull-crushing in its presentation. I'm currently listening to some liquid funk drum n bass tracks (which I know quite well), and the bass is deep, fast, and quite upfront. This arrangment might be too much for classical-listening Grado fans, but it sure tickles my fancy.
I'm still dying to hear what 650s sound like when they're run in balanced mode, but I have to put a new roof on two buildings, so I'm afraid the funds for a balanced amp are no longer availible.
