The new Simon Rattle is excellent. The usual top suspects are the ancient Solti recording (not digital but it is remastered) and Tennestedt, both of which have aged gracefully enough, but the Rattle is as good as, if not better than, both of them. First class sound as well.

The other digital version I have is Abbado, but this is really quite slack in its tension, so I wouldn't recommend this.

I haven't heard it, but Nagano's recent recording of the 8th was highly lauded at classicstoday.com. My personal favorites are the Solti and Kubelik (Audite -- recently remastered in SACD/hybrid) but neither of them are digital recordings, but rather analog recordings that have been transferred to cd.

Edit: There is also Rattle's recent M8 on EMI but I don't feel that it matches the splendor of the Solti nor the sheer energy and emotion of the Kubelik which is a live performance.

Colin Davis on RCA. Spectacular sound, blazing performance.

Ones to totally avoid:
Ozawa (Philips) -- boring, superficial
Maazel (Sony) -- Slow and uninvolved
Jarvi (Bis) -- glib, uneventful, unmoving
