A fatal flaw in OSX for me is the loss of volume control when using SPDIF, yes I know the theoretical reasons but I simply don' t care enough at the volume I run it at. I am "stuck", not sure if this is good or bad though the audio is nice, with only SPDIF in on my soundbar so I absolutely need it.
I am thinking a USB soundcard (since USB normally allows volume control) would be my best choice. The 2 things I need:
1: Allow volume control even when using SPDIF on the soundcard (the entire point)
2: Cheap since I really don't "need" this.

Before someone mentions Soundflower, it works but lags when changing volume and distorts audio in OSX 10.9.x, it didn't do either in 10.6.x - 10.8.x except at extreme volumes (Movies with DTS/FLAC/AAC 5.1 audio) where I was simply bypassing soundflower any way.
