One of the hinges in on my M50's broke today. Needless to say, I'm bummed and need a replacement. I was pretty content with them so I haven't been keeping up with headphone news the last couple years.
The M50x is kind of tempting, but I wouldn't mind trying something new. I would like to keep it closed or semi open back, though something with a wider soundstage than the m50s would be preferred.
I listen to post rock, electronic and some metal and would also game with them. I don't have a dedicated amp, however my motherboard has a OPA1652 amplifier built in, andclaims it can drive upto 600 ohms. Not sure I believe that though.
Budget $250 or under.

Edit: Sorry, I can't read. Will be moving this. Delete if necessary.

The ATH WS99, MDR 1R, ES FC300 are my top recommendations.

The FC300 has a modest u shaped signature, but not as bad as the M50's. An exiting listen.

The WS99 is basically a better M50 with more mids and less treble.

The 1r may not win in balance or detail but it's comfortable, looks good, and has a good soundstage.

No need for two threads: http://www.head-fi.org/t/710539/m50s-unexpectedly-broke-need-some-ideas

It splits the discussion.
