I have done some digging and researching for some closed portable headphones in the $200-$250 range for listening to metal. I spend a lot of time in the library, so I need something I can wear for hours at a time with good isolation. I came up with these three:
V-Moda M-100
Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro
Sony MDR-1R

I know the M-100 is more but I am willing to spend more if it is worth it. As for the Beyer's, I found them on Ebay for about $200, and the MDR's I found for about $220, the M-100 is full $310. What do you guys think?

I guess I should also say that I value a hard case, so I am kinda of deterred from the Sony's as they will basically live in my backpack, but if there is a hard case available that I didn't see, I will probably buy that

I would probably go with the Sony MDR-1R or the M-100 but the m100 have bass vents on the sides which tend to leak a little bit of sound which might be slightly heard in a library if someone is next to you or very close. The Custom One Pro would be a good choice but not a big fan of the looks.

The M-100 only leak a little bit of sound, the quick tight bass depends on the source but with a good source the bass is great

Honestly, they should all perform roughly the same within their segment (with different signatures of course). Apparently people didn't appreciate that much the Beyers over here. The only ones with carrying case are the M100 from your list, but you can always buy a case for any model.

Would you consider the Ultrasone Pro900? Has its own excellent carry case, isolates well, amazing bass and quality and can be found for $250ish.

Can I get a description of the Sony and the M-100 sound signature?

The MDR-1R is more neutral for mids and highs with a bit heavy bass; the M-100 is very clear all around but with V-shaped high and diffused bass.  Go for the M-100 if you can afroid it, and look for deals too, as some Amazon sites in Europe discounts the M-100 to as low as 200 Euros from time to time.

So I ended up going with the M-100 and i got SCREWED!!! I live in Canada and, looking at prices, decided to pay $10 more to get them from V-Moda rather than Amazon. With shipping I ended up paying roughly $330, which I was okay with. Then they showed up at my door and import fees were $65!! I was choked but I would be even further behind to send them back and order them from Amazon so I (hesitantly) paid the $65 to receive them. Now my ears are too big for the ear cups so I probably have to order the XL size and pay another chunk of change. I LOVE how they sound but they are a tad uncomfortable. Plus they're not quite worth $400
