I am tired of seeing so many new expensive players with short battery life. Why don't we see players under $100 with 40+ hours of battery life, a card slot, a standard micro usb connector, and tactile buttons? It would be even nicer to see some with 90 hours of more of battery life. The Cowon M2 is listed as having 90 hours of battery life, however it is touchscreen, and has a semi proprietary connector. It is also around $150.

My Sony E465 and E474 seem to have a long battery life, but no card slot.

A rockboxed Clip+ or Zip allows for playback while charging so you could pair it with a power bank to extend its battery life.

That is awkward. I bought some battery packs a few years ago, but don't use them much.

+1...these players immediately came to mind upon reading the initial inquiry....

or maybe the clip sport? i think Fiio is also releasing their version of the Clip - the M3 if I'm not mistaken.

I'm talking about 40+ hours of battery life in a player under $100 with a card slot and decent hardware and firmware. Does it exist? If not, why?

Maybe including all the features you want can not be manufactured and sold for under $100.

You could get a Clip + or Clip Z and an external battery pack for under $100.

I think the simplest answer to this would be cost. Maybe manufactures can make one, maybe not - but I would say it all boils down to cost. To me i'm not really bothered if my dap can't get 40 hours of playtime as I charge my unit every night :)... but that's just me...
