I have a 5G, 30 gig diyMod with a new battery and the Hitachi hard drive.
My files are lossless. It's connected to my PPA through an external cap box
with a 3.3uF Audiophiler cap, bypassed with a .18uF Vitamin Q for each channel.

When I start playing, the battery indicator drops like a rock. After one
album, it shows that it's half depleted. What could drain the battery
that fast?

Your battery is bad sounds like. Got one of those in the mail before.

I hope that's all it is, but I'm thinking it may have some kind of internal
short that's draining the battery even when it's off. After I started this
thread, I checked the battery and it was dead, even though it still showed
some life left when I shut it off earlier today.

I bought this from the 'For Sale' forums to diyMod, and found that it had
been hacked into before, so I'm thinking maybe something else could
be wrong with it.

The batteries aren't hard to switch out yourself and you can get a replacement off of ebay for cheap. Just don't buy one that claims an absurdly high mah rating. Those batteries will work great for a bit but the performance quickly turns to crap (often times worse then stock ipod battery) in less then a year.

I am shocked to hear that, My opinion is to return it if possible, the one-song- playing- ratebattery is definitely defective.

Your problem could be that the files are lossless. As I understand, the IPOD is designed to use the HD as infrequently as possible and attempts to cache whole song(s) in RAM.

With large lossless files this approach is not possible (they are too large to fit entirely in the cache) and the end result is that the IPOD has to access the disc much more frequently, therefor considerably increasing its power usage.

As an experiment, try playing compressed files and see if the battery life improves.

Smells like a faulty battery. Since it is just a couple of days old and can not hold a charge...
Ask for a replacement.

GaryJW

Something tells me that this may be part of the problem. The battery
in my 4G diyMod only lasted a few hours at best, but not as bad
as this one.

To all ya'll

Awright, awready. I'll order a new battery.

I'll report back after I install it.
