I managed to just stop my friend from buying those Apple In-Ears and I told him he should get an earphone that isolates some sound because he always turns his iPod up to like 60% volume to block out external noises and I always keep mine at about 30%, maybe 40% in noisier areas with my Marshmallows.

But he doesn't like the look of them, so what other low cost earphone options are there? The most he's willing to spend is about $30-40 dollars.

He listens to a wide range of music including lots of bands that are like rock/punkish and some hip hop and r&b and pop-ish stuff.

Thanks.

Sony's MDR-EX32LP are a nice headphone, as would the Sennheiser CX300.

JBL Reference 220s. They're around ~30 dollars. They received a lot of praise when they were at the ~70 dollar price point but now for some reason the price has dropped quite a bit. The general consensus is that it's 1-2 notches above the cx300. Bass is much more controlled and the 220s are more balanced (although they may still be more on the bassy side)

I will second the JBL Reference 220's. They are great since you can get them for 30 bucks on amazon and they sound amazing for their price.

Skullcandy gets a lot of flak here, and for good reason. They suck. But they're cheap. Denon Ah-C351s are going for $30 on Amazon, and that's real value for money. Search around on Head-Fi and you'll find some good comments (and not just by me, heh), though many will suggest an upgrade to the 551s, whic hare currently $50.

If you're going for SoundMagic IEMs, try the PL11/PL12s.
