I'm looking for potential upgrades to this setup.

Depends. If you're using digital input and driving headphones, then they'll have to work at the same time, otherwise the audio chain will be broken and you don't get any sound.

If you use analogue inputs into the NFB-28 then the DAC stage will not run. That said, the power consumption is too low for you to notice any difference in your electricity bill doing this.

If you use digital input and then use preamp output to speakers, chances are the output stage for the headphones is still getting some power, just not consuming power as it normally would when given a signal and load. So basically it'll be idling, but it's a Class A circuit idling, so it'll be a little bit hot.

No idea, haven't tried that one or any products from that brand. Look up the specs - if output power is markedly lower than there are fewer headphones it can drive without distortion.
