My father in law is driving my mother in law crazy, because he can't hear the TV sufficiently at normal volume levels. She wants to get him a pair of headphones that are wireless, have an independent volume control (so he can play them as loud as he needs to), and can connect to the TV.

Sennheiser RS120-II? $99.99 at BestBuy for example. You'll need to use the TV RCA outputs and route the audio that way, or the TV speaker will cut out when the headphone socket is used.
