I have been using a Corda HA-1. I thinking to changing to a tube type amp. I'm using HD590 and K271s cans now but also thinking of get hd650's. Looking for amp under $500.00. Looking for suggestions on a good amp. I was looking at a Wooaudio 3.

If you are into DIY or having you build one, do a search and read up on the Millet Hybrid. I received one a bit ago from forum member Zemo, and it's been pure bliss ever since it's arrival.

The thread can be found here .

study the schematic for the Mapletree amps on the site. compare to any others you might be considering. then decide. (you may not be able to find other schematics. that does say something.)

The WooAudio 3 ($480 with shipping) pairs Very nicely with the Senn 650's. Beautiful sound, plenty of power. Good bass dynamics as well. The particular unit I have does not work well with my Grado 325 and RS1s - distortion at medium volume levels and up. Wei Woo is investigating the cause. I have heard it also works well with Sony CD3000's too. I will be trying it out on the new SA3000's soon.

As Robert noted, check out the MAD offerings:

I'm considering one of these when funds permit. -------- Tom

I think you should go to a meet and try to listen to either a woo or a ppx. Both are fairly common in the US, and you can decide for yourself depending on the sound.

I agree. I find that my enjoyment of an amp is directly related to what it sounds like.

The Singlepower ppx3 or Woo 3 would be my two top choices. Ask about the ppx3 upgraded to use 5687 output tubes.

What do the 5687's offer over the 6CG7's?

Here's the pricing page. You get to it through the order page, there's a link in the first sentence.

Edit: Sorry, didn't realize the base prices weren't listed anymore. The base PPX3 used to go for $465 but that may have changed.

More tuberolling possibilities!

Seriously, the 5687 has a much higher power output(up to 2.5x more peak power vs a 6sn7gt) which seems to translate to better bass, dynamics and openess. The 5687 is a clean, precise sounding tube much like the 6cg7 so they mate well. So far, the tung sol blackplate 6cg7 and tung sol 5687wa are excellent together. But the combo I have had in the last few days (RCA clear top 6cg7/ Raytheon 5687wa) may be even better. This amp has a meaty and powerful mid-bass and the best qualities of the 6cg7 tubes come through unscathed.

I have been buying up 5687's for months now and I have all the good ones....so stay tuned.
