I realized you say that you will travel by plane next month. If it is specifically for travel purposes wouldn't you like to consider a pair of headphones with active noise cancellation?
My understanding is the HD25-SP is not in the same class as the HD-25-1, HD25-1 II or recent Amperior. I think when most folks here talk about HD25, they mean the HD25-1 or now the HD25-1 II. I don't have anything against the SP. Several years back when I bought my HD25-1 I was told here to make sure to get the HD25-1.
This ^ Make sure you get the HD-25 II because the HD-25 has BAD isolation and can definitely use the help of an amp. Also very hollow sound next to the later models and other portable cans.

ok..i've ruled out the M50's as i hear too many mixed reviews about these ..i've now thrown in the mix the HD25-1 II...so i'm now wondering if the HD25-1 II are good for rock/ metal?? if if i spent the extra money for the HD25-1 II do i need an amp for those?? or do i stick with the ultrasone HiFi 780's w/o and amp??????
Get either Marshall Major fx 50 (make sure it's the fx 50) the Marshall Monitor or V-Moda M80. The Montiors have great leakage and NOBODY will hear what you're playing. However you will hear engine noise so isolation is only average. Rock sounds sensational on them. The Major FX 50 may be even better for rock depending on your taste but leakage is not as good as the Monitors but you won't hear engine noise on the flight. Also has a more pronounced midrange than the Monitors. M-80's are also great for rock and you won't be able to hear engine noise, but leakage is the worst of the 3. I've also had problems with cables shorting out on the M80s and even had the part where the jack connects short out.
Al 3 of these are sensational for rock, VERY loud so you won't need an amp, and the Monitors are very durable.

M50's are boring boring BORING and not really a set of rcok cans imo. 780's are sweet but there are better cans for rock.

I have the Monitors now, had two pairs of the Majors before, gave one pair to my cousin and another pair to a friend. Both love them. Greats sounding headphones. I'm wearing my Monitors right now
those are def. out of my price range right now..will consider these for the future ...

What did you end up selecting? I also listen to alternative/hard rock/metal and am currently in a similar dilemma. I am debating between the V-Moda 80's and the Ultrasone hfi-780's. Would care to share your experience with your selection?
