I am in search of something that could replace my generic apple earbuds.

I find myself using them more often than my IEMs and fullsize cans because I listen to music when I am on the go (still need situational awareness), and I skype or call frequently. The apple headphone seems to do all that except it doesn't sound good. So I want to upgrade to something with the same functionality (same port mic, volume and pause buttons would be nice, non-seal) as the apple earbuds but better sounding. I want to know what my options are as I couldn't find much information from my research and an additional, separate mic unit usually adds bulk and complexity as an everyday item. Also, ideally this could be < $100 so I don't have to baby it like my other headphones.

Might be a few non-IEMs in the list.

Note that there are some IEMs that are much less isolating than others. Could be the right IEM could still suit your need on situational awareness. Those reviews are ranked by isolation, too, so you might find some.
