hi,

i'm looking for some comfortable neutral headphones, that are non-iem based with little clampforce.

i have been using a sony 7506 for the last 5 years and liked its tonal character, but want something different due to the cups not being comfortable. (i am not interested in the beyer dynamic velour mod).

my requirements are that the phones are best in the tone frequency area used by speech, as i will be using them to listen to speech-driven podcasts.

further to this they will be driven by an ipod-class mp3 player.

budgetwise i would be willing to stretch to €200($300)

currently i have been looking at the sennheiser hd25-1-II and the akg k242

i would be grateful for any suggestions

beyerdynamic dt880 (32ohm). well balanced and should work on all your portable sources. + it has that clamp factor you mentioned + their ultra comfortable. they are $300 tho. (maybe $260 if you get lucky)

they are technically semi-open, so sound will be leaked, unless you're personally looking for closed?

thanks for the suggestion, but wouldn't my mp3 player struggle with 600ohms or do beyer have a version that can be driven by an mp3 player

My bad, I didn't read your post closely enough. Like David.M said there is a 32ohm version.

If you want comfort then probably beyerdynamic DT880 600ohm. I was thinking about the DT48 but it's not comfortable.

DT880/600 will technically be better if OP has the adequate amping(which i assume he does not) So 32ohm seems to be the preferred choice.

nvm

Rossinator got the memo. I'll leave that post for future references

are the hd25-1-ii and the akg k242 rubbish compared to the dt880 32ohm, as the latter is twice as expensive as the former two. i only want to use these to listen to voice podcasts when i'm in bed.

Somehow I don't think you need DT880s to listen to a guy speak. If you're planning on getting an amp later and doing some music listening with them then DT880s might be good because they leave upgrade options, but otherwise it's overkill for podcasts.

It would be mighty helpful if you told us what it was you didn't like about the HD650 and Dt770. Additionally, I'm sitting here wondering what's the fuss over a can for listening to a voice in a podcast. Sounds like you want something comfortable and reasonably priced?
How about the Denon AH-D1001K? It's now on sale at HeadRoom for US$109.

There's also the Senn HD448 - now at HeadRoom for $99.95

i didn't like the sound signature of the 650.

dt770 nice bass but sounded muffled overall.

the hd280 and hd448 seem to be step down from my old sony 7506

just checked and found a cheap akg k272 55ohm for €130
