Well, just coming up on this site, I feel I should get my first pair of cans to replace my low-quality IEMs. I mostly listen to rock/alternative music, and I have a budget of about $100 to spend here. I do not have any amp or other sound-enhancing products, and these would be for home use. I am looking for closed cans with a high(ish) sound quality for my budget, noise reduction is always a bonus but I am mainly just looking for quality and keeping almost all if not all of the sound in.
I was thinking of getting Equation's RP-21s but I am not sure if they are what I am looking for or if they will need an amp to sound good.

I don't have much headphones suggestions for you but I would advise you to to have 3 or 4 options an lurk the FS forum to grab a deal.

DO check people's feedback when they are fairly new and have -500 posts (less than a year on Head-Fi)

AKG K81Dj would be a solid choice for under $100, as would the Grado SR60 if you prefer an open design

Denon D1001k. excellent sound straight out of mp3 players, keep ALL the noise in (they don't totally seal OUT noise, however). Smallish for being over-ears. Comfy as hell, AND like $80 on amazon.

These always get recommended as first headphones.

Well if you're going for closed I can recommend the M-Audio Q-40's I cant compare them to the k81 but the k81 suffers from massive head clamp. The Q40s because of their metal hinges can be shaped to the necessary clamp you need by stretching them overnight over the long side of the box.

Other than those I havn't heard any other closed cans in that price range.

Common Recs are the aforementioned Denon d1001k and the Equation RP-21. With the common consensus that the Denons are the most comfortable of the 3.

Erm...D1001s fit most of the OP's requirements. Sub-$100, closed, sound great, and are easy to drive. So, if the lack of isolation is not an issue - and it shouldn't be in a dorm/library/work setting - then the D1001s are for you. In my experience, though not in everyone's, leakage is very minimal. I get the feeling that some people experience leakage because they're getting a bad fit.
