I always liked Sixpence none the Richer. Leigh Nash also has 2 solo albums which are worth checking out in my opinion.

I only have 2 songs by them but I really like them. Used to listen to them a lot when I was 9-10. They were Kiss Me and There She Goes.

Well, if you want some classical music in your collection, you must get Lorraine Hunt Lieberson. Start with the Bach Cantatas…they're unbelievable.

I enjoy Regina Spektor as well. Try "Begin To Hope" ... better than Far in a lot of ways.

Other female vocals to try...
Cat Power (already mentioned... but truly great, IMHO)
Neko Case (sings with The New Pornagraphers occasionally)
Nellie McKay
Cassandra Wilson (Bluesy)

Try New Buffalo or Anna Ternheim. Both do really great, sort of melancholy type songs.

Priscilla Ahn. She does Acoustic Folk. And I never listen to folk...except for her; she has an angelic voice. YouTube - Priscilla Ahn - Dream (Official Video)

If you don't care about lyrics, Younha is an incredible singer...in korean. She's probably tied as my favorite female vocals with Priscilla Ahn.
