There are actually quite a few in recent times combining electronica with jazz, although it wouldn't be a pure form of either, of course. But if you wanna get your feet wet in that combo, it doesn't get much better than the French composer working under the name of St. Germain and his album from 2000 called simply Tourist. Released on Blue Note. Here's the link to amazon and some stuff they say....

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...21728?v=glance

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com's Best of 2000
Smooth, downtempo grace flows through the veins of St. Germain, a.k.a. noted French composer-producer Ludovic Navarre. His record is a sensual flow of jazzy textures, Latin rhythms, and bass-ridden beats, hovering on the verge of techno, jazz, or experimental headphone music without tipping its hand too far in any direction. The result is irresistible: class with an edge. --Matthew Cooke

Amazon.com
Techno and house music producer Ludovic Navarre is--along with Laurent Garnier, Air and DJ Cam--one of the biggest names in French electronic music of the past decade. His ability to imaginatively blend jazz elements with recent dance-music styles has been demonstrated before, but the seamless quality of this release is stunning. Compared to someone such as Amon Tobin, who obviously (although brilliantly) creates sampled collages, St Germain makes it pleasantly difficult to identify the boundary lines between "live" performance, programmed electronics, and sampled sound. Part of the credit must go to this album's musicians, including Pascal Ohsé, Eduoard Labor, Alexandre Destrez, and Idresse Diop (at least some of whom are francophone Africans making their mark in the post-colonialist European Afro-jazz scene). The CD's opening piece, "Rose Rouge," is centered on an edgy piano rhythm and a looped vocal fragment from jazz singer Marlena Shaw. The dub-inflected "Montego Bay Spleen" features Jamaican jazz guitarist Ernest Ranglin, who offers a clean, warm, neo-Wes Montgomery style filtered through his years as a session musician-architect of ska and reggae. And Edouard Labor's raspy flute tone on "So Flute," its role as much rhythmic as melodic, adds a Latin flavor to the mix. "Sure Thing," another high point of the release, is built around a vocal and guitar sample from blues guitarist John Lee Hooker, borrowed from the soundtrack to Dennis Hopper's film The Hot Spot and noteworthy on its own as probably the only time Hooker, Miles Davis, and Taj Mahal ever played together. Navarre's skill in selecting musicians, finding sample sources, and assembling cool, streamlined grooves adds up to quite an accomplishment. --Bob Bannister

Album Description
Exclusive Import only 2 CD set includes a three track bonus CD which features an exclusive mix of 'Sure Thing' (Todd Edward's Deepline Remix) along with two mixes of his first single, 'Rose Rouge' (Blaze Early Shelter Mix) & (Spiller Rogue Mix). Signed to Blue Note for the world this is a great jazz/dance fusion record. Perfect for those dinner party's! Limited edition. Slimline double jewel case. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Electronica is a huge genre, you'd have to specify what you like. It spans the likes of IDM ("Intelligent Dance Music"), breakbeat, techno, trance.....

But here's a short list of all the major electronic artists that have emerged since 1990 and proven themselves with a string of solid CDs:

- Aphex Twin (IDM, UK)
- Autechre (IDM, American)
- The Chemical Brothers (breakbeat/techno, UK)
- The Crystal Method (breakbeat, American)
- The Prodigy (breakbeat/prog-rock, UK)
- Fluke (breakbeat, UK)
- Future Sound of London (IDM/surreal electronic, UK)
- Juno Reactor (trance, UK)
- Kraftwerk (techno, UK)
- Leftfield (techno, UK)
- Orbital (trance, UK)
- Underworld (techno, UK)

Most of my sub-genre labels are oversimplified, but you should get the idea. And as you can see, electronica is overwhelmingly dominated by the UK.

Not many American electronic groups exist...

IMO Jazz and electronica make sublime bedfellows. There are many good examples of this (BlackJackSkanz covers a good deal of them).

Check out the 'Ninja Tune' and 'Compost' record labels - they pretty much specialise in this sort of music.

BTW a good deal of the freshest modern jazz these days is coming out of scadanavia and germany, (and the uk to some extent) and is commonly known as 'nujazz', as is known for its crossovers into electronica (not always, but often)

Three to get you started:

Cinematic Orchestra - Everyday
Funki Porcini - Fast Asleep
Koop - Waltz for Koop

I would second that vote. I have been accused of being a Ninja Tune junkie. Also add Om Records, Catskills Records, 18th Street Lounge Records, & Warp Records.

As for the UK comment earlier, yes there is some truth to that comment but it is a bit exaggerated as the whole genre has spread to other shores and a good number of examples come from the USA, France and elsewhere. In fact that is one of the coolest things about electronic like jazz, you can listen to an artist from Japan, Finland or UK and you never have to cross language barrier. Besides if you want to be technical everything we call electronic music today got its start with DJs in Detroit back in the mid to late 80s. It's only because Detroit House went to England, was repackaged as Acid House and became a big hit that most folks assume UK in the same breath. Down the pike Trip Hop gets its start in Bristol but strikes a cord around the world and now is thrives more outside of England than within.

I am not going to have to many suggestions for living Jazz musicians. So I am keeping my ears open for others on that note(s)

some other records i like that are electronica-tinged jazz:

jaga jazzist - any, but i like the stix
matthew shipp - nu bop, equilibrium, goodandevil sessions, etc
el-p - high water

lots of stuff on thirsty ear's blue series (like the shipp and el-p) would qualify.

Agreed. But to start in jazz, I don't think you can do better than the first Miles quintet (w/ Coltrane et al)--'relaxin' maybe. Or if you want something a bit more rockish you could go with his 70s stuff, 'bitches brew', 'jack johnson', or 'on the corner' would be good.

For electronic, Boards of Canada ('geogaddi'), or Amon Tobin ('permutation') would be a good start......

Living jazz artists (this is not necessarily starter stuff): Jarret/Peacock/DeJohnette are one of my favourite trios. Younger and good are Ken Vandermark, the NYC scene (William Parker/Shipp/David S. Ware....), and Brad Meldhau.
