Consider researching:

Vsonic VSD3S

All of which are under $100 and punch higher than that $100 price tag. Don't let the lower prices fool you, if there's one thing in portable audio pricing of sound quality is all over the place. The IEM's above have been proven by Head-fi to punch above their class.

About the smartphone differences, while true to some degree there will be some sound variations depending on output impedance, power output, and overall synergy between your source and IEM, it mostly comes down to a very similar sound for most parts. I would disregard those thoughts ,(in basic form anyway) unless there is something seriously wrong with your source.
