I have always been interested in the background music from movies, games,etc... Unlike most people that I have known, I do not enjoy the sounds of vocals in music. So this leads me to believe that I would benefit in diving into the world of Classical Music.

As a novice, are there any recommendations on tracks/albums that would be high on immersion and intensity for newbies (I have recently turned 26, so perhaps I would not enjoy music that is laid back)? I am not sure if I would favor any specific musical instrument, so perhaps I would favor a full orchestra. Though I did listen to a few Mozart symphonies with violins I believe, and they sounded good to me. I think I would like an album(s) that has a bit of everything to start out with.

I have highly sensitive audio setup that picks up any flaws in the musical recordings, so any poorly recorded CD's or downloads will not work for me.

Thanks.

I guess there is hardly any better starting point than this Mercury Box and for sure the sound is excellent.
There is some tape hiss as these are "historical" recordings, so when you are allergic to that, it's not enjoyable for you.
Other than that little imperfection, these recordings are among the finest ever made. Just my $0.02.

Lately, after 50 years of listening to classical,of all types, even some opera,I have started to really enjoy movie music.
One composer,I highly recommend is:
Hans Zimmer -he has written the music for many of today's popular movie scores.
Good luck in your journey..

Thanks for the suggestions. I will take this slowly and I have bought the Bach CD for now. I will review the other suggestions as I am not sure how much more $$$ I will have to purchase atm.

If you are into soundtrack music, then you ought to check out The Planets by Gustav Holst, as this epic piece was hugely influential. There are various decent recordings. I like the one conducted by Handley, but the one by Dutoit has had some good reviews too.

I'd also recommend picking up a collection of Wagner overtures (including Siegfried's Funeral March, if possible).
