Hey all, I've realized it's time to upgrade my portable setup. I use it for 8-10 hours a day work and then even when not at work.
DAP - I'm looking at the FiiO X5 II. Price to performance seems quite good and it has a lot of storage space. What's the point of a high end player if you can't hold all your music on it in a lossless format? Any other suggestions here?
HP - I'm a bit conflicted here. I'd love to get something like the Mr.Speakers Alpha Dog as I'm a fan of planars. But their harder to drive than a dynamic can and the Alpha Dogs look somewhat beefy to transport around. But well, sound is king...
Amp - Since I'm looking at somewhat harder to drive cans I took a look at the FiiO E12. While it lists a higher output and more P-P voltage swing. They show a 170mA Max output while the X5 II shows as over 250mA. I'm rather confused here
And who knows after I try out the setup without an amp I may decide I don't need one.
So I'm looking to keep things from getting too expensive, maxing out at $1k USD. I'd of course prefer to be under that, but I also hate upgrading as I go along.
So I guess my biggest question is headphones. I'm not much of an IEM fan as I don't really like the feeling of things jammed in my ears and worst of all... They seem to make the insides of my ears itch!!! So closed backs are what I'm looking at. While I'm not looking for a closed back LCD-2, I don't want to go for something that say sounds like a HD800 either.
And any thoughts on other players / amps? The FiiO stuff seems to be pretty high up there on what you get for your cash, but with all the stuff constantly being released who knows what I've missed.
Thanks for your thoughts!
