How about some Shures? I doubt he'd think they look ugly and they sound good. Maybe Fostex T50rp? I'm an AKG fanboy so I'd recommend anything from them (pretty much every AKG except for the K812 I've seen for under $280).
And Finally the reigning (IMO) kings of affordable sexy headphones

i really think the akg are sexy atleast the open headphones but sadly they all need amp.
the meze 73 seems sexy :O now i want a pair my self xD is it over-ear ? hows the sound  ?:p

No clue, I think I saw a thread where they were decent.... Not every AKG needs an amp, my K240's are good without but vastly superior with.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned NAD Viso HP50. Amazing closed headphone that does not require any amplification. Works well with any genre of music IMO, excellent value for the money. Brilliant headphone and my go-to can when I can't use an amp.

It has a sensitivity of 115db/mw and 16 ohms impedance so it really doesn't need an amp. It also includes a case.
