Hi,

I am new to the forums, and also new to the headset/phone world. I have only owned two pair of headsets in my life. One of them broke after 4 months of use ($50 Corsair), and the other one lasted me for about 1 year and 9 months ($60 Turtle Beach x12). I am a little upset about having to change headsets so often, so that's why I came here to ask for advise on a good pair that will last me for as long as I have use for them.

I have been searching around, and I hear that most headsets are crap, and that I should purchase a pair of headphones and a microphone instead. However, most of the "GOOD" headphones I have found are on the same price range as the headsets, if not more expensive, and I really don't believe that BS about most headsets being inferior to headphones.

Anyway, I have a price range of around $200 top (including tax and S&H) , and if possible I would like to get a headset instead of a pair of headphones and a microphone. I have dedicated most of my afternoon looking at different headphones and headsets, and the following ones caught my attention:

Please go through each link if possible; for the most part I am looking for a durable and comfortable headset, with decent sound and microphone (not a big audiophile). If the best bang for my buck is a headphone and a microphone, then so be it, but I would really like to consider all of my options.

Right now the PC 360 looks like the best option, but it sits right on the $200 mark. I don't have a dedicated sound card or anything like that, so I am mainly just looking for something that's comfortable, has a good built quality, and with decent sound(Similar to the Turtle Beach x12 would suffice). Also, since the audio quality is not a big deal for me, I am not willing to pay an extra $50-100 just because of it.

Anyway, any help is welcomed. :)

I'm not an audiophile like some of those around here, but I think I can give you some decent advice.

First, if you haven't read it:
http://www.head-fi.org/t/534479/mad-lust-envys-headphone-gaming-guide-updated-12-27-2013-mrspeakers-alpha-dog-added

With that out of the way, are you looking for open or closed headphones?

Closed headphones in general will give better isolation and bass, at the cost of soundstage and some other stuff.

Open headphones will give better soundstage and that other stuff (treble or highs, something like that), at the cost of bass and isolation. Plus they will leak sound.

Use a cheap mic(logitech desktop mic, zalman clip on, antlion modmic) and a soundcard(Asus xonar DG), the things people say about headsets really are true. They're overpriced, trashy, and they have bad build quality, plus even good gaming headsets sound absolutely horrendous with music.

Here are some open headphones:
http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-Headphones-Burl-Wood-Accents/dp/B0042A8CW2
http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-504631-HD-558-Headphones/dp/B004FEEY9A

Here are some closed ones:
http://www.amazon.com/beyerdynamic-DT-660-Premium-Headphones/dp/B000Y03A3A
note: more neutral sounding

http://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-770-PRO-250-ohms/dp/B0006NL5SM
note: dt 770 80 ohms are really overpriced on amazon, they can go on ebay for about $170. hitechdirectco usually sells them. These are also bassier headphones compared to the 660, which are more neutral.

There's also the AKG K550's, but those are out of your price range, and the grapevine says that they're bad with glasses

I ead the thread you recommended me, and I looked up some of the recommended headsets on there, and I couldn't find many reviews on the ones I found interesting. I am looking for closed ended headsets (why would I use open ended?). I will mostly be using them at home for gaming and talking to friends. I still got my eyes on the Sennheiser PC 360 ($170 + tax), and if there isn't anything similar for that price I'll guess I will have to settle for that.

Anyone else has more suggestions for me?

If you want a headset : PC360 , MMX300 or headset versions of AD700X or A700x which arent in the market yet, but they will be soon.

If you want a headphone : HD598 , Q701 , AD700x , DT990 , Fidelio X1 , Sony Ma900

" I am looking for closed ended headsets (why would I use open ended?)."

Some people here say that Open headphones have better soundstage and therefore better for gaming and that closed headphones have less soundstage,

I use the closed version of AD700X which is A700X and i still get good soundstage....

I also have the HD598 which in my opinion sounds worse than the A700x!!!

A general rule of thumb is to check the pictures to see if the earcups have a grille on the outside.

and this is a quote from the ncix description:
The open design creates a noticeably more natural soundscape and ensures continuous airflow to keep users cool. Luxurious, powerful, innovative and intuitive – at the very highest level, the new PC 360 G4ME is the new headset to beat.

 go for the pc360s
