I really, really like the HD800 - and have no intention of selling them. However, I'm looking for headphones that will give me a "fun," energetic sound.

Among the competitors so far?

1. Denon AH-7000, 7200:
I don't like headphones with flabby bass, but these are said to deliver bass with power - while keeping a certain amount of definition.

2. Beyerdynamic DT-1770:
I read good things about the balance of bass and treble, but I've also learned about "loose drivers." I've owned and enjoyed the DT-880, but never their closed phones.

3. Fostex TH-900
These look promising, but they're a bit more expensive than I want.

I'm aiming for a price around or under $500. Any suggestions?

The Fostex TH-X00 Purpleheart falls within your budget, definitely a top contender for powerful, deep bass but also accurate. In fact any of the old Denon AH-D headphones (AH-D5000, 2000 and 7000) and any of the Fostex TH-X/TR-X provide the kind of sound you are looking for. But the TH-X00 Purple Heart is definitely the one with the best quality of bass, from all the one's i've heard.

th900, its what i have. don't settle on less from fostex, the 800S is sufficiently acute you want as much from the recessed mids that 900 will offer.

Not sure if I am allowed to do this but I am possibly selling the sound you are looking for. Look for the Lawton Tr-x00 in the for sale page and let me know if you are interested.
