Looking for a Bose OE replacement

I don't really understand those graphs but according to joker, the CAL2 arent that bad http://theheadphonelist.com/initial-impressions-creative-aurvana-live-2/

Also, while I did say I liked the v shape sound signature, I'm now wondering if I actually do (although I definitely like that sparkle) cos I've been messing around with my EQ and found that everything sounds better (even if it's just a bit) with a mild 250-500Mhz boost (which I think is what people mean by warm)

I think I might order a paid of 770s and 880s and compare them, and just send the least favourite one back :p

edit: why is the 880 so expensive? Double the price of the 770 and 990 -_-

How likely is it that the 990 wont meet my needs/ leak too much sound?

I think that the 990 is too hot in the treble! the DT880 and DT770 have a v shaped sound signature, but the 990 is exaggerated (at least to my ears). The Dt990 will leak sound because is an open headphone, the DT880 is a semi-open headphone and leak sound too but in a minor way. The price depends of the country (in Amazon USA,  DT770 250ohms- $169,          DT880 250Ohms Pro- $189,        DT990 250ohms Pro- $149)

So the Beyer 770 is the best Beyer option for me :D

Anyone know of any other alternative headphones?

Honestly I wouldnt get the CAL! 2 because I would never drop that much money on a no name brand.

AKG, Sennheiser, and Shure  are ones that come to mind.

For AKG - the K550 or K545

For Sennheiser, HD 558 and HD598 (And maybe the momentum if you're into that sort of thing)

For Shure, the SRH840.

The 558 is the only one out of those that appeals to me (price wise and looks) but IIRC someone said that they won't be that good for me, although I might see if I can try them first.

So it's now down to the 770 and the 558. I'll do some more research but considering the 558 open backed as well, I might have to rule them out.

Quick question : are the Base OE1 open backed? They (obviously) are on ears, but the ear pads are flat with not hole, if you see what I mean. The isolation and sound leak I got from them were decent, and I wouldn't mind if the 558s had a similar level of leak

No, the Bose oe1 aren't open backed, they are semi-open (although not very open, more like a closed back). The Hd558 is open back, it leak substantially more than OE1, and you will get no isolation. The Hd558 Is an excelent headphone for my ears and have a great soundstage too, but if you like v shaped sound signature as you stated, is NOT the headphone for you, the Hd558 is mid-Centric.

Sorry but Creative is not precisely a "no name brand" nor Beyerdynamic.

So the 558 are pretty much ruled out then.

The 770 are gonna be miles better than the CAL 2, right? If there's no other options, I'll probably be done and get a pair of the 770 then

I've been looking at a few reviews, and a couple of people are saying that they're "true to the music"? I'm not sure if that's a comparison to the other headphones on the market, but I thought it was worth asking about.

The 770s should be good for gaming, right?

If you want a closed headphone, yes the DT770 has great soundstage for a closed can, and good for gaming. True to the music i suppose that is a headphone that have a good level of transparency with little Coloration or uneven frequency response.

Just went on Amazon and found a limited edition version of the DT770 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Beyerdynamic-770-Limited-Edition-Headphone/dp/B008POFOHM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1393537374&sr=8-3&keywords=DT770

Any idea what the difference is, and if it's worth getting?

edit: I cant read - Looks like it has a lower impedance and a straight rather than coiled cable.

But will the Asus Xonar definitely power the 250Ohm version? Will there be much of a noticeable difference in the 250 and 80 (maybe even the 32?) I'm asking cos I'll be going off to Uni soon, and if I don't take my desktop with me, I doubt a laptop would be powerful enough to drive the 250Ohm

Unless there's a cheap enough amp that I can use with both a desktop and a laptop, but I doubt something like that would be good

edit 2: Something like this? http://www.amazon.co.uk/FiiO-E06-Portable-Headphone-Amplifier/dp/B005HJWWW8

Bump

So if the 250Ohm 770 is noticiably better than the 80Ohm (I hear the 80 is more bassy?), I think it might be better to get an amp rather than a soundcard, so any suggestions would be great!

Beyerdynamic DT770 80 Ohm versions have more bass while 250 Ohm versions are more balanced. Something like Fiio E11 would be great for driving any of this headphones.

I might see if I can try both Dt770 versions then, not really sure what I'd prefer.

That amp look good, but is there anything cheaper? I'd rather not have to spend an extra £50 :frowning2:

if there isn't an amp that cheap but powerful enough to drive the 250Ohm, would a computer be alright to drive the 80Ohm unamped?

I know a few of you guys arent too fond of it, but would the ATH M50 be better unamped?

I think you won't have any problems driving DT770 80 Ohm with a computer. You can use them 'unamped' until you can get an amp to make them shine.
