Also, while I did say I liked the v shape sound signature, I'm now wondering if I actually do (although I definitely like that sparkle) cos I've been messing around with my EQ and found that everything sounds better (even if it's just a bit) with a mild 250-500Mhz boost (which I think is what people mean by warm)
 
I think I might order a paid of 770s and 880s and compare them, and just send the least favourite one back

How likely is it that the 990 wont meet my needs/ leak too much sound? 

I think that the 990 is too hot in the treble! the DT880 and DT770 have a v shaped sound signature, but the 990 is exaggerated (at least to my ears). The Dt990 will leak sound because is an open headphone, the DT880 is a semi-open headphone and leak sound too but in a minor way. The price depends of the country (in Amazon USA,  DT770 250ohms- $169,          DT880 250Ohms Pro- $189,        DT990 250ohms Pro- $149)

Honestly I wouldnt get the CAL! 2 because I would never drop that much money on a no name brand.
 
AKG, Sennheiser, and Shure  are ones that come to mind.
 
For AKG - the K550 or K545
 
For Sennheiser, HD 558 and HD598 (And maybe the momentum if you're into that sort of thing)
 
For Shure, the SRH840.

No, the Bose oe1 aren't open backed, they are semi-open (although not very open, more like a closed back). The Hd558 is open back, it leak substantially more than OE1, and you will get no isolation. The Hd558 Is an excelent headphone for my ears and have a great soundstage too, but if you like v shaped sound signature as you stated, is NOT the headphone for you, the Hd558 is mid-Centric.

I've been looking at a few reviews, and a couple of people are saying that they're "true to the music"? I'm not sure if that's a comparison to the other headphones on the market, but I thought it was worth asking about.

If you want a closed headphone, yes the DT770 has great soundstage for a closed can, and good for gaming. True to the music i suppose that is a headphone that have a good level of transparency with little Coloration or uneven frequency response.

edit: I cant read - Looks like it has a lower impedance and a straight rather than coiled cable. 
 
But will the Asus Xonar definitely power the 250Ohm version? Will there be much of a noticeable difference in the 250 and 80 (maybe even the 32?) I'm asking cos I'll be going off to Uni soon, and if I don't take my desktop with me, I doubt a laptop would be powerful enough to drive the 250Ohm
 
Unless there's a cheap enough amp that I can use with both a desktop and a laptop, but I doubt something like that would be good

Beyerdynamic DT770 80 Ohm versions have more bass while 250 Ohm versions are more balanced. Something like Fiio E11 would be great for driving any of this headphones.

I think you won't have any problems driving DT770 80 Ohm with a computer. You can use them 'unamped' until you can get an amp to make them shine.
